THE ALLIANCE OF DENTAL HYGIENE PRACTITIONERS

Founded in 2000, the Alliance of Dental Hygiene Practitioners is an organization created by and for dental hygienists with community practices, hygienists interested in becoming direct providers, and supporters of the mission of the Alliance and its members.

Our mission is to improve the oral health of our communities by promoting evidence-based, cost effective oral hygiene services, access and education; and to support consumer choices and community partnerships.

Since 2000, the Alliance has held two continuing educational Forums each year. One is held in the spring in conjunction with the Washington State Dental Hygienists' annual Symposium. This Forum focuses on the "nuts and bolts" of building successful community practices and small businesses. The second annual forum is a 2-day August Retreat held at the Icicle Inn in Leavenworth, WA. The Retreat line-up focuses more on leadership skills, interpersonal communications, personal enrichment, and balancing work and play. Networking and fun are built into both Forums!

The Alliance strongly encourages membership in our professional organizations, the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) and Washington State Dental Hygienists' Association (WSDHA). At present, there are no dues for membership. We have an active list-serv which is a pipeline for new scientific research announcements, grant opportunities, public health and other health care information, and other pertinent news.

Our network of practitioners actively mentor and refer care to each other.
We are proud of the innovative preventive oral health programs are members have created. Programs like the Senior Smiles for Life, preventive dental programs for seniors 60 and over, now operating in many Washington senior centers; Dental Hygiene Health Services, providing preventive services to residents of residential facilities for elders in King and Pierce Counties for over 20 years; Washington State SmilePartners, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization has several programs in operation: Mom and Me, Cavity Free, hospital-based preventive services for pregnant women, new moms and dads, infants and children at Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale; Smart Smiles - school-based preventive dental services for preschools, elementary, middle and high schools in King and Kitsap Counties; and Smiles for Life on Bainbridge Island. All WA State Smile Partners' programs accept private insurance, Medicaid and have reduced fees on a sliding scale according to income.

Since 2000, membership has grown
to include approximately 70 active practitioners, with 25 associated supporters in Washington and Oregon.
